Ladybug Program
The Ladybug Program, started by Stepanie Prescott of the Rotary Club of Concord in 2020, aims to support women and teens in Contra Costa County.
We have a silent crisis in our state called Period Poverty where females struggle to afford and attain period supplies and menstrual health education. We find this crisis unacceptable and, therefore, have taken major steps to mitigate Period Poverty in our county.
Our Ladybug Program enables females to have complete and free access to menstrual supplies as well as menstrual education. We source period supplies which include pads, tampons, feminine wipes, disposal bags, and period information flyers. Our Ladybug crews assemble these supplies in discrete small red bags. In typical Rotary fashion we share our bag assembly events with other Rotary clubs, community groups, schools, Interact, and Rotaract.
Our Ladybug bags are donated to more than 25 different organizations, including County programs, crisis centers, unhoused programs, and local schools. In addition to our supply bags, we also donate our booklet, written by the Ladybug Program. It’s called FACTS. PERIOD. It is designed for 9 to 15-year-old girls. FACTS. PERIOD is a complete guide about starting menstruation and about the physiology just mentioned.
These booklets have been very well received by our local elementary and middle schools. We are very excited to share our booklets, as we believe educating about menstruation is a key component to understanding and eliminating Period Poverty in Contra Costa County. Since 2020, we have served over 16,000 women and teens in our county, and we look forward to continuing this effort with great zest.
The Ladybug program is always looking for support. We happily accept supply donations and financial donations, and we welcome partnering with us to assemble Ladybug bags.
